What’s the meaning of Granulation? In the production process of functional ceramics, ultra-fine raw material particles are desired from the perspective of promoting sintering and solid-phase reactions. However, finer powders have larger specific surface areas, which negatively impact fluidity. This makes dry press molding challenging, leading to uneven filling of the mold, and resulting in formed parts with holes, corners that lack density, lamination, and elastic failure. The granulation process is often employed to address these issues.
The granulation process involves grinding fine powder, drying it, and then adding adhesive to achieve good flow and a particle size of about 0.1mm. In general, the adhesive used should meet the following requirements: it should have sufficient viscosity to ensure good formability and mechanical strength of the body; it should completely volatilize during high-temperature forging, leaving minimal adhesive residue or impurities in the body; the process should be simple, non-corrosive, and have no adverse effects on ceramic properties. Commonly used adhesives for dry molding granulation include:
Polyvinyl alcohol aqueous solution: The production process using this adhesive is simple, resulting in ceramics with low porosity. The addition amount ranges from 3% to 5%.
Paraffin: Paraffin has a melting point of about 50°C, giving it thermoplastic properties. As the temperature increases, viscosity decreases. When the temperature is above its melting point, paraffin can flow and wet the surface of ceramic particles to form an adsorption layer, providing bonding. It is beneficial for cold flow in dry pressing, with a typical usage amount of around 8%.
Phenolic varnish: The production process using this adhesive is straightforward, resulting in high mechanical strength in the body. The addition amount is about 8% to 15%.
Sulfite pulp waste liquid: The adhesive formula consists of 90% water and 10% sulfite pulp waste liquid. Its addition amount is 8% to 10% of the porcelain powder, although the green strength it provides is relatively low.
